On a day when spring overcast skies cast a gray shadow over Hong Kong, the picture within the halls of Sotheby's sales was much less gloomy. The house celebrated the year's first major international auction of 20th century Chinese art and contemporary Asian art, and many works prompted bidding spirit in the room and on the phones. In a day of amazing success, a number of record prices were established.

The morning session, dedicated to the art of 20th century China, demonstrated the strength of the category, with 44 sales of 55 lots, most of them for "modern" masters. The auction raised an impressive HK $ 92,693,750 (U.S. $ 11,862,019), well above its presale high estimate of HK 51.12 million U.S. dollars.

Five of the ten articles of the session of French education, mainland-born painter Lin Fengmian who was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution and forced to destroy many of their works. He died in Hong Kong in 1991. An educator and artist, Lin is considered a pioneer of a school of Chinese art that combines traditional aesthetics with compositions European use of color. In 2007, the Hong Kong Museum of Art honored him with a major retrospective.

An Asian private collector paid HK $ 16,340,000 (U.S. dollars U.S. 2,091,030) for fishing harvest of the artist, setting a new auction record. Records were also set for Chinese artists. Sixty-three years of the cycle of Chariot, a conceptual piece of Huang Yongping, brought HK $ 3,380,000, more than twice its high estimate HK $ 1.5 million. Legacy Mantle, a rusty, about 10 feet high iron sculpture of a Mao jacket by Sui Jianguo, sold by a robust HK $ 3,140,000 (HK ¨ C3.5 est. $ 2.5 million).

In total, 74 percent of lots sold, a respectable result in the credit crisis era. The top lot was a painting without Zhang Xiaogang title, which sold for HK $ 4,820,000 (est. $ HK4 ¨ C5.5 million). Second was the hat of the series? Armed Forces by Yue Minjun, to HK $ 4,580,000 (est. HK $ 3.5 ¨ C5.5 million). Yue remains a favorite of the auction, and archeology was photographed for HK $ 2,060,000, almost tripling its high estimate of HK $ 700,000.
